Today a woman called my place of business (a self-storage facility, for those of you not in the know) and told me she had a storage-related question. For some reason, I assumed that this would be a reasonable question about renting a storage unit or our facility or something that wasn’t completely vapid. Instead, she told me that she had in her possession several plastic storage containers. She said that she liked to place things in the containers and stack them on top of each other. She said, however, that the containers on top would often crush the containers on the bottom because of the weight of the items in the containers. She asked me how she could remedy this. I told her that I was not an expert on packaging, but merely leased out units to tenants looking to store things. I did, however, offer a general common sense answer. I prefaced it by saying, “Without knowing any of the particulars and without having any packaging expertise,” and told her to stop stacking them on each other or purchase some containers that were built to be stacked on each other. She asked me if I knew where she could get some or who she could talk to about stackable containers and I told her, quite bluntly, that I literally had no idea. She hung up on me.
